Oftewel: what’s in it for me?

… anyone seeking an innovative way to market themselves, stand out in the crowded job marketplace, discover and create compelling opportunities, collaborate more effectively with colleagues, classmates, business professionals, and drive results.

Logotype ResumeSpongeWith its name, ResumeSponge makes very clear what it wants: to soak up as many resumes as possible. Not even the logotype allows for any misunderstanding. But the bigger question is of course: why would I want resume sponge to soak up my resume. Or in other words: what’s in it for me?

ResumeSponge calls itself a Social Career Platform (everything must be social nowadays…) and is intended for:

… anyone seeking an innovative way to market themselves, stand out in the crowded job marketplace, discover and create compelling opportunities, collaborate more effectively with colleagues, classmates, business professionals, and drive results.

Well, ResumeSponge is not going for modest statements. Nothing can do without the word social, but does it also mean that you will get anything from it? Time to find out.

Homepage

ResumeSponge | Homepage, 1

ResumeSponge | Write a recommendation

Vreemd genoeg is de optie Request a recommendation lang niet zo fraai:

ResumeSponge | Request a recommendation

ResumeSponge | Post a job

Prior to founding ResumeSponge, Solomon was an associate at a boutique investment bank that specialized in M&A and Private Placements.

Homepage
The homepage of ResumeSponge is huge. And then I mean gigantic, because the thing is both horizontally and vertically unprecedented. I show below, therefore only the first physically visible part:

ResumeSponge | Homepage, 1

Yes, the road to success is clearly visible, and ResumeSponge will apparently help me in that. The very long homepage is also divided into three parts, where each part can be approached through navigation at the top (Home, Features and Who’s it for?). Creative but not intuitive.

By the way, these are the features that ResumeSponge offers:

ResumeSponge | Homepage, 2

Haven’t I seen these features somewhere before? Of course, at LinkedIn. ResumeSponge seems to be a spitting image of LinkedIn (Profile, Recommendations, Connections, SpongeMail (Inmail) and Jobs). Is Resume sponge just a shameless copy of LinkedIn, or is this an example of intelligent reuse?

Let’s go ahead and register right now. Once I’ve done that (first name, last name, email address, password, country and a fucking CAPTCHA) I get to see this dashboard:

ResumeSponge | Dashboard

And then there’s a second part to this dashboard:

image

That’s extremely inconvenient. A dashboard with more options than can directly be shown (?). On a dashboard you would prefer to see all the options at once. Anyway, let’s examine the various options. I choose the option Build your profile and said a quick prayer. Surely ResumeSponge will not be so stupid as to make me reenter a whole profile?

ResumeSponge | Profile page

Whoa haha! ResumeSponge is stupid enough to think I would want to enter a full profile! I should check afterward who the creators are, because they must be dumber than a bag of hammers. With this ResumeSponge has already immediately made itself obsolete. If you are such a late entrant to the personal branding market and you do not understand that potential users already have a profile, then you really do not understand anything.

So ResumeSponge is then not really true. Nothing is being soaked up. They expect me to fight the same fight again to create a profile. Not so. I’m not crazy!

Let me see what else can be done. The next item I click in the Dashboard is the Import your contacts option:

ResumeSponge | Import contacts

Nothing special, but nice that Plaxo is still there. I thought by now that site was completely over the hill. And of course very inconvenient for all those Outlook users who are put out to pasture by ResumeSponge. Thanks!

The option Write a recommendation looks neat, but the graphic design of the site is rather nice anyway:

ResumeSponge | Write a recommendation

Strangely enough, the option Request a recommendation is much less attractive:

ResumeSponge | Request a recommendation

As if several designers have been playing around on the site. Well that’s a shame.

As a last option there is also the possibility to post a job. And just as with a profile you will be busy with this for a while. There are in total five steps you need to go through, but then you can post a job for free on a site without visitors:

ResumeSponge | Post a job

And then the known inability to cancel your account with social media sites. In this case, ResumeSponge has the decency to include the option, but unfortunately with the text coming soon… The proper translation of this text is in my experience: never

ResumeSponge | Account settings

And that’s about it. There is nothing to do on ResumeSponge, but that’s also not the case on LinkedIn.

Conclusion
ResumeSponge is a 100% LinkedIn clone. With a nicer interface. And fewer options. And what good is a LinkedIn clone if you already have a LinkedIn profile? There is absolutely nothing innovative about ResumeSponge.

In my opinion ResumeSponge is nothing more than a thinly veiled attempt by the founder (Solomon Engel) to be bought. The man has no experience at all in the personal branding market:

Prior to founding ResumeSponge, Solomon was an associate at a boutique investment bank that specialized in M&A and Private Placements.

Engel is no doubt gambling that he will be bought by a major party. Given the complete lack of innovation and in particular the stupidity to offer no profile import facility, it is unlikely that a party of any importance would offer even $1 for this sad (albeit nice looking) attempt.

I think there is only one road for ResumeSponge and that is the road to its deathbed. Let’s hope it is a highway so that aren’t too many job seekers wasting their time on this site.

I also think it would be good if LinkedIn took a look at the graphic design of ResumeSponge. Because that is nice. But please copy it with intelligence…
