Kelly Services announced the first-quarter results yesterday. The U.S. temp agency was faced with the crisis at an early stage. At Kelly, the turnover in the U.S. market – accounting for roughly two-thirds of total sales – already started declining in 2007.

Omzet en brutomarge Kelly Services, Q1 2008 - Q1 2010For Kelly, that preferably places tons of temp employees through bulk contracts with multinationals, that is problematic. Since the company concludes many large volume contracts, the margin is low. And precisely that margin received a hit last year, according to this graph.

But with the euro crisis looms a much larger problem for American temp agencies like Kelly Services.

Schrikkelkwartaal
Daarbij moeten we twee opmerkingen maken.

We wachten in spanning af.

Leap quarter
In this graph, the drop in sales for Kelly doesn’t seem that bad. But we should make two comments. The company reports in periods of 13 weeks. Once in the more than five years Kelly has a leap quarter: a period of 14 weeks. The turnover during that period is a few percent higher because of the extra working week. The last leap quarter was the fourth quarter of 2009. If we correct the extra week, then Kelly still shrank during that quarter.

In addition, Kelly, for its European subsidiaries – accounted for about one fifth of turnover – in recent crisis years benefited from the strong euro. Now that party is over and Kelly has a problem. Because the euros, which the company earns here in Europe, provide fewer and fewer dollars. While the market starts to improve again, we will see little sign of it in the dollar report with Kelly. The result is an even longer period of loss for the already late-cyclical European market.

Euro Crisis for American temp agencies
And this is bad news for Kelly, which has already reorganized many of the European subsidiaries rather roughly and some countries have even been sold or given up. Kelly Services in Europe is too small to make a fist, and serves too many multinationals to announce a massive retreat from the Old Continent. A strategic cooperation, like the company announced this week with the Japanese Temp Holdings could be a way out of the European malaise. We hardly dare to think it out loud, but would USG People be a candidate for a similar strategic alliance? The question is what the management of Kelly will announce regarding the European subsidiaries in the coming quarters.

Moreover, the rapidly sinking euro rate is an even bigger problem for competitor Manpower. The world number three makes two thirds of its turnover in the eurozone. If the euro crisis creates a double dip, this should already be very well visible in the second quarter of 2010. We’re waiting with baited breath.
