In het boek Data Grab beschrijven Ulises & Couldry een apocalyptische toekomst die doet denken aan het boek 1984 van Orwell. Volgens de auteurs zijn we beland in een nieuwe fase van het kolonialisme: datakolonialisme. Waar het historische kolonialisme land, grondstoffen en lichamen (via slavernij) opeiste voor economisch gewin, eigent het datakolonialisme de menselijke ervaring toe als ruwe grondstof. De Grab verwijst daarbij naar een ongeoorloofde toe-eigening. Net zoals kolonisten land als “onbeheerd” (terra nullius) claimden, claimt Big Tech onze data als “vrij beschikbaar” voor hun algoritmes.
De auteurs maken daarbij (pg. 13 – 14) een bijzonder interessante observatie; namelijk dat de terms of services (ToS) van Big Tech grote overeenkomst vertoont met een Spaans document, geschreven in 1513 (Requerimiento), gebruikt om de lokale bevolking te onteigenen:
But, if you do not [submit tot Spanish rule], I certify to you that, with the help of God, we shall powerfully enter into your country, and shall make war against you in all ways and manners that we can, and shall subject you to the yoke and obedience of the Church and of their Hignesses; we shall take you and your wives and your children, and shall make slaves of them, and as such shall sell and dispose of them as their Highnesses may command; and we hall take away your goods, and shall do you all the mischief and damage that we can…
